About Rutland, Massachusetts

Rutland is a beautiful town of 9,300 people, nestled in the central Massachusetts hill country and incorporated in 1722. Plentiful stone walls add to its colonial feel. The town itself is located in the geographic center of Massachusetts, and the “Center Tree” is within its borders, which marks the exact geographical center of the state. Rutland also has the highest average elevation of any community between the Atlantic Ocean and the Berkshires, at 1,200 feet, giving it a comfortable climate, accounting for why Rutland was famous in the late 1800s for its clean air and as a center for health resorts. Today, a large number of Rutland residents commute to Boston, Worcester, or Springfield. Worcester Regional Airport is just nine miles from Rutland, and Rutland is only about half an hour from Amtrak’s Union Station in Worcester, which is the western terminus for the MBTA Commuter Rail Framingham/Worcester Line. Rutland is part of the Wachusett Regional School District, which consists of the towns of Holden, Paxton, Princeton, Rutland and Sterling.
