Newsletter Introduction: July 2023

What an amazing response to my feature story from the June issue: Considering Multi-Generational Living, an In-law or Accessory Apartment? I received so many comments and questions on it, and really respect how many people are considering this as a future living option. I’d love to see photos and hear more about your projects like this.

Speaking of projects, for 6+ years I’ve been bothered by the interior of our house having SO MANY different metal finishes, specifically related to cabinet and door hardware, extending to bathroom hardware and lighting fixtures.

A few weeks ago, I decided to unify it as much as possible, and it sure wasn’t going to be to the brass swirly interior door handles that have graced the house since somewhere around the mid-1990s. I bought a few sample replacement interior door hardware options to try style and color on for size.

We settled on the Schlage Latitude in Satin Nickel finish, and have been chasing down all kinds of other things like kick plates, door stops, closet knobs…basically anything we can find in a metal finish is getting swapped out to satin nickel, and WOW, what a DIFFERENCE!

Pictured above is Before/After, with the right side door having the brass handle and (painted on) hinges, and the left door showing off the more contemporary satin nickel finish.

Bottom photo is the absolute worst door handle set up in my house. Three different finishes in one setup. 🙁 Must. Go.

Bonus is that my youngest daughter (who always seems to be long on ideas, short on cash) was able to be quickly trained in door hardware removal/installation so progress is being made while I get other things done. She’s actually for hire if you want to do the same project at your home.

The hardware we bought is available locally at Aubuchon Hardware and Jed’s Hardware in Holden, and of course online. I found that the pricing was pretty competitive regardless of local or online. What a short money home improvement!

What have you done that gives you that same home improvement satisfaction? I’ve got a few project ideas on the horizon~~
