Product Review: UPLIFT Standing Desk

Remember the song Ironic by Alanis Morrisette? My boring version of that is that I treated myself to a standing desk (did a lot of research to choose the best one for me), and I broke my foot on the day it arrived. I’ve been sitting at my standing desk now for about two weeks, which is not really very handy timing, considering it’s the Spring real estate market. Whenever people ask me how I broke my foot, the answer is ‘multitasking’. I saved two seconds, and lost a month. I’m very grateful for everyone who has been driving me around since then. Jay has read so many books, while waiting in the car.

Back in January, we decided to have some people over as a motivation for us to tidy up, and just generally chip away at things we’ve wanted to get done around the house. Then Jay threw me for a loop with his being ‘too dizzy to have people over’, which turned into the Great Pacemaker Adventure of 2023, and we canceled that party. Time passes quickly, and next thing I knew it was late April. We decided to invite the same group of assorted people over for a casual Saturday evening. Because we are heading into tennis season, Jay kept giving me more names of people we should invite. What started as 8 people turned into 20+.

By Wednesday night of a week that we were having a Saturday night party (remember, it’s the Spring real estate market, and I also had open houses that weekend), I needed to ramp it into high gear and get A LOT of things done around the house. I had my music on, and I was stacking boxes up all along the back stairs. My plan was that the next morning I would take the boxes off the stairs and bring them to the attic.

While on my last trip back down the stairs, on the second to bottom step, I decided to save two seconds and back down those last two stairs, rather than turning around and walking down forward. While doing that, I forgot that two of the last steps are triangles instead of rectangles, like steps should be. So, backing down resulted in me tumbling down two steps. To add stupidity to injury, we have a huge glass vase full of tennis balls in our mudroom. I did not want to break the glass vase, so I reached, like a soccer goalie, to grab that vase. That’s when my left knee hit the tile floor and my right foot flipped upside down and smashed on the bottom step. I’m now wearing an Aircast boot for a month. AND I’ve yet to stand up at my standing desk, but I know I will really enjoy and appreciate it when that day comes.

I wanted a standing desk because my job has me sitting at my desk a LOT, so I decided alternating between sitting and standing would be most comfortable and best for my posture and back-health long term. I was considering a few different brands of standing desk, and these details in a review from The New York Times: Wirecutter gave me a solid point in the right direction.

“No matter how great your office chair is, sitting in it all day isn’t doing your body any favors. But being on your feet constantly isn’t good for your comfort or health, either.

An electric, height-adjustable standing desk gives you the best of both worlds. Want a productivity and energy boost? Push a button to raise the desk so you can move a little while working. Feel like leaning back in your chair for some deep focus time? Push another button to lower the desk.

After reevaluating our top picks and testing three new models, we’ve reconfirmed that the Uplift V2 is the best standing desk for most people. It accommodates a wide range of heights, it’s stable at even its tallest setting, and it features a greater variety of attractive customization options than you’ll find on any competitor.” –The New York Times: Wirecutter

I used the UPLIFT online customization tool to design my desk, and when I reached out via chat to UPLIFT Desk, the representatives were very helpful and answered all of my questions and even gave me opinions about the selections I was making regarding leg style, color, etc.I’m most happy that I upgraded to the 60″ x 30″ size and went with the Bamboo top.

Upon opening the packaging, we discovered that the bamboo desktop was damaged in shipping. I went back to the live chat on their website and again, the representative was very helpful, arranging for a replacement desktop, which shipped the same day and arrived two business days later.

The instructions for setup were very clear and all of the components are very sturdy. Overall, I’d say UPLIFT Desk is a company that delivers a high quality product and a high quality customer service experience. Highly recommend!
