I decided to write a story that’s also a list of firewood suppliers–because right about now is when I see people starting to post on Facebook looking for firewood. At the bottom of the story is a list of firewood suppliers in Central Mass. Kids in this photo above are now all in their 20’s!

One of the things I like about writing stories is that I often remember things from years or decades prior that I haven’t thought about in forever. I’d never thought of this before, but every house I lived in as an adult has had a wood-burning fireplace or woodstove.
We currently have a beautiful open fireplace, but as far as efficiency goes – – I much preferred having a woodstove at our house in Westminster. When I was a kid we had a pot belly stove that would sometimes burn orange (which I now think probably means it was being dangerously overtaxed) and it didn’t even have any safety gate around it. We had just gotten a new navy blue enamel woodstove in Westminster, shortly before the Ice Storm of 2008. By the time the lights came back on days later, our beautiful new stove had food stuck to it that never came off, ever.

The photo above shows how our lack of outdoor storage space required immediate stacking when the firewood would be dropped off in Westminster. We had to park our cars in the road until all the wood was stacked.

I enjoy stacking wood – – kind of like the old joke about it heats you up three times or something like that. It’s free exercise, helping get the house ready for the winter, it’s a bit of a puzzle to get it all lined up so it doesn’t topple over, and usually at some point, someone else will come outside and help and visit. All good.
I actually really like chopping up kindling with my Ryobi Lopper, especially apple wood kindling. That stuff makes starting fires a breeze.

One year I decided to get artsy and stack the firewood in a circle, which has an official name of Holz Hausen. It took a bit of convincing, but we had enough wood in it to last 2 years, and then when it was all used up, the soil was so rich – I turned it in to a round zinnia garden. Here’s a video in case you also want to get creative while stacking your firewood.

Here’s a list of firewood suppliers in Central Mass. I will tell you that I have only personally bought from Princeton Tree Services, C.L. Smith Timber Services, and Central Mass Tree. I don’t know who has and doesn’t have a supply of firewood right now, these are just places you can reach out to. It’s also not an exhaustive list, so if I missed your favorite firewood supplier, just let me know.
