Spring may be struggling a bit but the plants are awakening and starting to show themselves! It’s time to take a look at what’s growing in your gardens and think about what you can dig up and donate to the Wachusett Garden Club annual Plant Sale. The Plant Sale will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 9am – noon at the Thomas Prince School, located at 170 Sterling Road in Princeton. The Plant Sale is our only fundraiser and the proceeds go toward Wachusett Garden Club community outreach programs including the plantings and signage of the redesigned Lisa’s Pollinator Garden at Thomas Prince School as well as plantings and maintenance of the Veterans Memorial Garden on the Princeton Common. For a successful sale we rely on you to donate plants and help with the potting, labeling and pricing of them.
To get the plants ready we will be having our fun Potting Party on Wednesday, April 30, starting at 6 pm. Potting up the plants by then will allow them to get over the shock of transplanting and look their best at the sale. If you can, please bring (or drop off) your plant donations already potted and labeled. We’ll split, pot and label as needed and do pricing.
We continue to be concerned with preventing the spread of the invasive jumping worms and need everyone to take precautions when digging up and moving plants. There’s a data sheet with info on jumping worms and best practices for inspecting and potting plants below as well as an ID sheet on invasive or aggressive plants. We don’t want to discourage you from donating plants and ask you to do the best you can to reduce the risk. We thank you for your efforts!!
Regarding the potting party itself – it is an informal evening of work and socialization. Bring your gardening gloves, comfy shoes, trowel, a snack and/or beverage to share (much wine is usually consumed!), along with any plants you can donate. If you can only stay for an hour, that’s fine; stop by anyway. This is a great way to spend time with other gardeners, learn about plants you may not be familiar with, ask questions and just have fun. You don’t have to be there at 6; come by when you can and leave when you have to. Your help is always appreciated.
We’re soliciting input from Wachusett Garden Club members regarding specific plants you are looking for. Many of us have plants we’re happy to thin out, but not sure what there is a demand for, so if you want something specific, contact us and we’ll compile a list.
Contact Wachusett Garden Club for more information about the Planting Party, Wachusett Garden Club membership and any questions you have. We’d love to meet you and share our love of gardening!
