Rattle Root Farm (July): Local, Organic and AMAZING produce!

Amazing! **And I didn’t think I’d be saying this, but my expectations have been far exceeded! Last year, when the not-yet-operational farm next door to us was advertising shares, we bought in just to be good neighbors. We purchased a full share, which gets us 12 points worth of produce for a solid 20 weeks from the beginning of June through the end of October. Pictured above is my selection from last week’s options.

Rattle Root Farm is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm, with weekly pick ups — we had the choice on our pickup day, Tuesday or Friday each week. The farm is located at 89 Mirick Road in Princeton, and although they have sold out of shares for this year, it appears that their crop yield will be more than sufficient to support the committed customers and more!

If you don’t didn’t get in on their sold out shares, they will be setting up Saturdays throughout the season, at the Mountainside Café at 213 Mountain Road in Princeton, 11am – 2pm on Saturdays through October 28, 2023. Rattle Root Farm will have a small farmers market with a sampling of their available products each week.

This week our take home selections included amazing carrots that don’t need to be peeled before eating, cucumbers, and my favorite, the fresh greens. Something I hadn’t thought about was just how fresh the items would be. I said to Jay that our greens last longer from the farm than they do from the store. He’s sometimes a little more on top of things than I am. He noted that instead of spending a week on a truck to get to the store, we are getting picked-same-day produce. We’ve now picked up 4 weeks and not one leaf has gone to waste. ***Although we are eating a LOT more salad than we usually do.

A perk of having purchased a share is our ability to visit the farm and participate in some pick-your-own herbs and flowers, at no extra charge–I made a wonderful vase presentation of these assorted yellows and oranges, mixed with some chamomile for filler flowers.

“Rattle Root Farm is a one acre, no-till, hand-scale farm situated a stone’s throw from Mt. Wachusett in Princeton, MA. We grow beyond-organic vegetables, herbs and flowers for our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), wholesale, and farmer’s markets.” –Rattle Root Farm website

If you signed up for a share, you should be getting a weekly email letting you know what’s available for your Tuesday or Friday pick up.
