Halloween Costumes Nostalgia and Ideas for This Year!

I love a good homemade Halloween costume! Looking for creative ideas? I’ve got some for you! For about the past 8 years I hand out treats and candy and ice cold water bottles at my Keller Williams office at 107 Main Street in Westminster. I think my record for waters given away is 10 cases, because at this point, the trick or treaters know where to go when they’re thirsty. I enjoy seeing the kids having a good time, and really appreciate seeing creativity in some of the costumes.

When I was a kid, we only had homemade costumes. I vaguely remember some costumes that are now considered vintage. They would come in a box with a glassine front, so that you could see the painful hard plastic mask. The mask was a combination of uncomfortable and flimsy. The elastic holding the mask to your face definitely did not hold up all night. Then there would be a low-grade outfit to accompany the mask. I was 7 when the first Star Wars movie came out, so when I think of costumes from that era, definitely a lot of Star Wars characters. I don’t have any photos of me in one of these costumes, because my costumes were made special.

My parents were among the original members of the Snowbound Club, which had an adult Halloween party every year. All the costumes were homemade. My mother would make the parents costumes and then after the adult party, would alter them down to fit my brother Jay and I. My parents were Raggedy Ann and Andy, then my brother and I were Raggedy Ann and Andy. My parents were bumblebees, my brother and I knew what was coming.

One thing I suspect was just for the kids’ Halloween party (because it would be weird to see parents doing this) was the mad scramble for coins in the woodchip pile. Parents would bring change and they’d throw all the coins in to a huge pile of woodchips (slivers, who cares?). Would our kids even jump down to the ground and dig like crazy to find a nickel? I think not, but we sure did!

I’ve loved seeing photos of the Snowbound Club Halloween parties of modern day, coordinated by my friend Deidra Laine for many years now.
