Are you over 60? Curious about senior centers in Central Massachusetts? Maybe you don’t think senior centers are cool, but I’ve seen my mother making new friends and enjoying the trips and activities organized by the Westminster, Princeton and Shrewsbury Senior centers. What? She doesn’t live in Shrewsbury. No worry – – once you’re a member of one of the senior centers in Massachusetts, you can participate in many of the activities organized by senior centers throughout the state! Well, that’s something I didn’t know.
Senior centers in Massachusetts are run by the local Councils On Aging, which are municipal entities, with people typically elected to board positions, and often with a paid director. There are 350 COAs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
If you qualify for membership (age is the only qualifier), you are eligible for the resources— programming, support, educational opportunities, advocacy, transportation, health screenings, and more.
My mother is 74 and only really started participating in senior center activities after she moved into a new town where she didn’t know anybody. She was brave and I’m sure she’s glad she took that first step!
