Local Business Review: Central Flag

When we bought our house in 2016, one of the things my mother really liked was the flag pole that could be seen from all directions on the approach to the property.

My mother is quite patriotic (so patriotic that she’ll send you a new flag if you need one). Two of our kids are Marines, and it just means a lot to my mother that we have a nice flag.

The next five years or so were problematic with the flag pole that came with the house. I think it was a bit homemade, and every once in a while, the wind would seemingly lift the top half up and send it to the ground. It was a hassle for Jay to deal with, and it seems kind of the opposite of patriotic if your flag is laying on the ground.

Because we live on the back side of Wachusett Mountain and our property is pretty wide open–with the flag not at all shielded from the highest winds that come through here, my mother decided we needed the type of flag pole that someone who lived on the ocean would have.

If you read my story on how we created our multigenerational living situation, I made reference to having conversations early on regarding who pays for what. Applied to the flag pole conversation: if the flag pole broke, it was on us to fix it. But since my mother decided that we needed a sea captain’s flagpole to replace our existing one, the project was on her. She got right to it.

The only things we asked to be involved in were the general location of the new pole, and please don’t get a flag bigger than the one at the world headquarters of Aubuchon Hardware.

Next thing I knew, the Mayor of Leominster, Dean Mazzarella, was in my backyard digging a hole for this new marine grade flag pole. I did not know that he owns Central Flag, and is an active participant in the installations. You learn something new every day.

My mother reported back that the pricing was fair and the options were presented with no pressure to upgrade. We’ve had our wind-resistant patriotic setup for a few years now, and have not had even one problem with it.
